Teaching Art at School

You don’t have to be an art expert to teach art!
Many private and charter schools are looking for art lesson plans that are systematic, comprehensive, classical, and easy to implement. And they’ve chosen our art lesson plans!
Art has fundamentals, just like every other subject. You can learn these fundamentals alongside your students using our art lesson plans.
What Order Should I Teach These Lessons?
For the most part, the lessons can be completed in any order. However , if you’d like to have a path to follow, we suggest you follow our three year cycle of art lessons. Each cycle has 6 lessons related to drawing and then 6 lessons focusing on some famous artists from the time period.
- Cycle 1: Ancient through Renaissance
- Cycle 2: Baroque through Impressionist with a side trip into our “Science Meets Art” lesson plans
- Cycle 3: Modern through Contemporary (focused on American art and history)

How Long do These Lessons Take to Complete?
Our art lesson plans are all written with multiple implementation options:
- Each lesson has 4 project difficulty levels- choose what will fit your students’ experience level and how much time you have to spend on it.
- Each lesson also has a few “Encore” ideas to help you extend the learning.
So, some teachers speed through the lesson and complete a quick project in 30 minutes while some spend 4-5, one-hour periods on each lesson.
What Art Lessons Are Available?
Some teachers are looking for an art lesson that ties in with a specific historical period or a lesson plan that incorporates specific art skills. If that’s you, you can use these helpful lists:
- Art lessons, arranged by historical period
- Art lesson plans, arranged by what art skills are taught in that lesson
- List of Art Periods and Movements with links to free resources and art lessons
